FAFSA updates

The FAFSA is available to complete online. The FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) for the 2024-25 academic year has undergone significant changes due to FAFSA Simplification. The form has become simplified and easier than ever to complete. To maximize your aid eligibility, make sure to file your FAFSA every year. Future FAFSAs will open on October 1st.

2024-25 FAFSA Update (3-26-24): Submitted FAFSAs have begun to process. With this announcement from the Department of Education comes some key points as it relates to your FAFSA:

  • Institutions will not receive FAFSA information until it is processed.
  • Students cannot make changes or corrections to the FAFSA until the first half of April.
  • Students will not know if there are errors or further documentation is needed until the FAFSA is processed. We will notify you at that time by email if we need additional documentation.
  • Once the FAFSA fully processes, the student will receive an email and instructions of how to access their FAFSA submission summary (FSS) at studentaid.gov.
  • Students can check the status of their submitted FAFSA applications at studentaid.gov.

To receive priority consideration for available institutional funds, submit the FAFSA by June 1st.

CMU's Title IV School Code is 002243.

CMU must receive your FAFSA application at least two weeks before the end of the semester for which you are enrolled.

Financial aid offers

All new eligible students will begin receiving their financial aid offers in the mail as early as mid-April 2024. Central Michigan University is committed to using the Principles & Standards of the College Cost Transparency Initiative in the offers to students. Learn more about the financial aid process here.

FERPA release

In accordance with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974, our office must receive permission from you to speak with an individual regarding your financial aid via the FERPA release form. Fill out your FERPA release form that is found within your financial aid portal under the drop-down selection in the documents area. You can contact our office any time to change your release.
